Ana Egge Interview from AMFM STUDIOS LLC on Vimeo. Ana Egge is a musician who’s soulful music took Austin by storm when she was just 17 years old.  Instead of embracing her success, Ana ran away from the spotlight and to New Mexico, then Brooklyn, where she met her wife and started a family.  Her documentary BRIGHT SHADOW,” which premiered at Austin’s oldest film festival aGLIFF last week, explains why. A heartfelt, raw and emotional doc, it covers 7 years of her life from good to bad.  Followed by a crew led by director Jesse Lyda, the film delves into the…

I’ve been calling my festival previews ‘Can’t Miss Picks’ for a while now, but that’s not a very good title. Sometimes, there is a festival where I’ve seen a lot of the films ahead of time, possibly at other festivals, or because they’ve sent me screeners – in that case, it works just fine. With something like Fantastic Fest, where I’ve only seen about 10% of the titles… how can I possibly know? So I am calling this Future Fantastic. I’ve built a time machine, in a storage unit, and I can go 1 week into the future. I spent…

At this point in time, the original BLAIR WITCH film has been entered into cinema hall-of-fame both for its trailblazing use of found footage and its inventive ‘this is real’ marketing campaign. I remember the Blair Witch website being the first ever movie website I went to for more information.  Part of what made the film so good was how little was explained between the credits – it left it up to the audience to do the work and decide what had really happened.  A few years later they tried to release a sequel, doing away with the found footage…

Twenty-five percent of millennials with a bachelor’s degree move back home for financial reasons. Forty-four percent of recent college grads are underemployed, working in low wage, dead end jobs. Only twenty-seven percent of college grads have a job that relates to their college major. There are approximately 1.5 million unpaid interns in the United States. Only ten percent of millennials in the U.S. think they’re living the American Dream, or believe they can. The numbers are terrifying.  This is the first generation in American history that is not going to have a better life than one before.  That’s the reality.  It reminds me…

Starting today, Austin’s most senior festival (29 years and counting) aGLIFF, the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival, returns to the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar with 19 feature narratives, 16 feature docs, retrospectives, shorts, parties and a whole lot of momentum.  After a year of packed houses at year round events, and a program director (Jim Brunzell III) who is entering his third year, aGLIFF has achieved something pretty remarkable in the festival world, consistency.  I had a chance to check in with Brunzell only days before the festival to chat about the program. BEARS: Approaching your third year,…
