The oldest kid rock camp in Austin has re-opened under the tutelage of new owner John Moyer (Union Underground, Disturbed). John has taught at the school since 1998, in-between touring the world as the bass player for the multi-platinum metal band Disturbed, which is currently on hiatus. The camp, which has a unique approach to music instruction, is located at the newly-renovated Music Lab, 1306 W. Oltorf in Austin TX. AMFM caught up with John at a rehearsal with the flagship “kid’s band” The Aviators in this interview. (video after the jump)

Natural Ear Music teaches the kids in a non-traditional school setting, utilizing the skills of some of Austin’s best professional musicians with real-world experience. Both Natural Ear Music’s teachers and alumni (a lot of the teachers are alumni as well) read like a “Who’s Who” of Austin musicians and at the end of each semester, the students have the chance to gig at one of Austin’s music landmarks, like the Broken Spoke and Jovita’s.

“It’s a great matchup not just for the kids, because their parents love seeing them onstage, but for the other musicians in town. A lot of times when they come back off of a tour they’re looking for something to do to make ends meet. I hope to be able to put a lot of local Austin Musicians to work when they need it.” – John Moyer

The Aviators will be playing at the Austin Sports Arena in Round Rock Jan. 6th, with an expected crowd of 300 to 350 people. Natural Ear Music will be showcasing their work as well as conducting a sign-up for the upcoming spring semester, which lasts for four months from February to May.
