Free Birds is a 2013 American 3D computer-animated buddy comedy film produced by Reel FX Creative Studios (with offices in Dallas and Santa Monica) Jimmy Hayward directed the film, which features the voices of Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson and Amy Poehler. it was released on November 1, 2013 by Relativity Media.  Paul Salfen caught up with George Takei, who voices a wise-cracking time machine in the movie.

PAUL SALFEN:  This is the Greatest turkey movie ever made right?  Of all time!

GEORGE TAKEI: It’s going to become a Thanksgiving classic.  When I was a kid it was Snow White, and Bambi – they are classics.  They’re still relevant today.  Free Birds is going to become that for Thanksgiving.

PAUL SALFEN:  What do you think you’ll always remember about recording for this movie, is there a certain scene that sticks out in your mind?

GEORGE TAKEI:  You know Jimmy Hayward, our director, is an editor himself, and he just brings his personality and energy and vitality.  Working with him, he’s got some great ideas, and he shares them with you.  That was the best part of this film, working with Jimmy.

PAUL SALFEN:  What was your “Hail Mary Moment” in life?

GEORGE TAKEI:  It was probably doing the Howard Stern Show.  You know, some people had advised me against it.  But I said “No no.  You have to be

adventuresome.  Boldly go where you haven’t been before.  And I did, and it’s given my career a second wind.  Also he’s made a common phrase that I use and you use too, into my signature.  “Oh My!”

PAUL SALFEN:  Oh my!

GEORGE TAKEI: OH MY!

PAUL SALFEN:  And the Sulu Dance.  I suppose we won’t see the Sulu Dance?

GEORGE TAKEI:  I don’t think so, but listen very carefully to the first voice you hear in the film – then listen to the very last one.  I don’t want to ruin it for you, but listen carefully.
