Review by Paul Salfen

This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters now is Renfield, the bonkers new horror comedy which sees Nicolas Cage star as Dracula and it’s as wild as you might think. Cage seems to be having the time of his life hamming it up and gleefully creating a bloodbath everywhere he goes. Nicholas Hoult is the perfect Renfield, with this fun yin and yang dynamic that is a blast to watch throughout the film, which is thankfully short, fast paced, and well made. It may be a little too bloody for some but it’s often over the top and cartoonish. It follows the dark one’s familiar as he tries to set him free from his overbearing master and their historically co-dependent relationship. It plays on all of the vampire lore and even cuts Cage and Hoult into some classic footage to tie it all in. Awkwafina adds in some extra comic relief and while the comedy aspect isn’t quite as sharp and the horror side, it’s still a decent mix that many other films get wrong. That’s it for this week.
