    THE BOOGEYMAN Movie Minute Review

    Review by Paul Salfen

This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is The Boogeyman, the new horror flick based on the Stephen King short story from his beloved Night Shift collection. Directed by Rob Savage, who gave us the inventive Zoom-based pandemic hit HOST and the bizarro but also unique and creative Dashcam, has to give up the gimmicks here and do a straight-ahead narrative of a well-known author’s work that’s been adapted by 3 writers – and he does a fine job. Based around an entity that lives in the dark and preys on fear, the concept is not new, but what King has always done so masterfully is flesh out characters we care about – and Savage and company had to extend that beyond the short story and make it a full length feature. The scares are quite frightening and the spooky atmosphere is what you hope for in a horror film and with decent performances by the young stars, it’s better than expected but it’s not perfect by any means. Horror fans may call it better than average – especially with so many bad King adaptations, but it’s certainly passable at a time when we’re way too far away from Halloween – it’s the freshest you can find during summertime. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM Magazine, and RECRD.
