Emily Bett Rickards on Bringing First Million Dollar Female Athlete In the World, Wrestler Mildred Burke, to Life in QUEEN OF THE RING

    Story by Paul Salfen

Emily Bett Rickards is practically glowing as she sits down to talk about her starring role in QUEEN OF THE RING, a film that’s hitting screens just in time for Mother’s Day. This isn’t your typical wrestling flick—it’s the true story of Mildred, a single mother and trailblazing wrestler who defied the odds to chase her dreams. In an exclusive chat, Emily opens up about the magic of making the movie, her deep connection to Mildred, and why this story is one we all need to hear.

Making an independent film like QUEEN OF THE RING isn’t for the faint of heart—tight schedules and big ambitions often collide. But for Emily and the crew, it was a blast. “We had so much fun,” she says with a grin. “Our dreams are always bigger than what we think they can be, and that’s how they should be.” That spirit shone through, especially during the filming of the final match scene. Shot over three long nights, it features a crowd of real Louisville locals who brought unshakable energy. “The background actors never failed us,” Emily recalls. “The energy is palpable—you see it in the movie, and it’s because of them.”

Before landing the role, Emily admits she knew little about Mildred. “I didn’t know anything about her before I read the script,” she says. “It felt like a disservice to me and to everyone else who didn’t know her.” That realization lit a fire in her. “It’s important to be choosy with the stories I tell,” she explains. “Mildred’s story felt propelling. I’m grateful to be part of the vessel that gets it out there.” Playing Mildred became more than just a job—it was a mission to honor a woman whose strength and grit deserve the spotlight.

For aspiring actors dreaming of their own big break, Emily’s advice is simple yet profound: “See if you like it. Find out what lights you up and go for it.” She recalls coaching a young actor who had a breakthrough moment of truthfulness in a scene. “That’s why we’re here—to tell stories and connect with others,” she says. It’s a reminder that acting isn’t just about fame—it’s about finding what makes your soul sing.

At its heart, *Queen of the Ring* is about resilience. Emily hopes audiences walk away inspired to “lift each other up” and push through self-doubt. “It’s about having your own back and keeping going,” she says. Mildred’s voice was a constant companion during filming: “Get up, keep going. Don’t take unfairness for an answer.” That tenacity, paired with the film’s celebration of community, makes it a story that resonates far beyond the wrestling ring.

With QUEEN OF THE RING in the can, Emily’s already eyeing her next adventure. “I’m in a bit of a pattern right now, looking at a couple of jobs,” she teases. Whatever she chooses, one thing’s clear: she’ll keep picking roles that matter to her.

Why is this the perfect Mother’s Day movie? For Emily, it’s all about Mildred’s dual identity as a wrestler and a single mom. “She never thought she had to sacrifice being a mother or a wrestler,” Emily explains. “Both complemented each other and made her whole.” It’s a powerful message for anyone juggling multiple roles—whether you’re a parent, a dreamer, or both.

As QUEEN OF THE RING gears up to win over audiences, Emily Bett Rickards portrayal of Mildred stands tall as a tribute to grit, heart, and the unbreakable spirit of a woman who wouldn’t back down. So grab your mom, hit the theater, and get ready to cheer for a story that’s as inspiring as it is entertaining.
