By Paul Salfen AMFM Magazine | November 2025 National Adoption Month Exclusive
In the remote mountains of Guatemala, a baby girl was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate—a condition so severe that doctors gave her no chance of survival. That baby should have died. Instead, she lived to tell a story of divine intervention, sacrificial love, and the transformative miracle of adoption.
Today, that baby is Camey Joy—author, speaker, singer, wife, mother, and living proof that beauty can rise from the deepest scars.
In an emotional interview with AMFM Magazine’s Paul Salfen, Camey opened up about her debut memoir Beautifully Scarred (released November 2025), a book that has arrived at the perfect moment: National Adoption Month.
“Adoption didn’t just save my life,” Camey told Salfen. “It showed me what grace looks like. I learned that love doesn’t have to look like you to rescue you.”
From Certain Death to Divine Appointment
Camey’s biological father carried her down a mountain, desperate to find help. Doctors turned him away—there was no money and no known surgery that could save her. As he wept over his dying daughter, two strangers suddenly appeared.
“They said, ‘Sir, why are you crying?’” Camey recounted, her voice still filled with wonder decades later. “When he lifted the blanket from my face, they saw my deformity and said, ‘There is hope.’ They directed him to Casa Guatemala orphanage.”
When the orphanage director turned to thank the men, they had vanished. No one had seen them arrive or leave.
“I believe that was divine intervention over my life,” Camey said quietly. “That was my Hail Mary moment.”
Chosen Twice
At two months old, Camey became a foster child. Soon after, an American family chose her forever. But adoption, she emphasizes, is far more layered than a happy ending.
“Adoption is beautiful—and it’s layered,” she explained. “It’s more than giving a child a home. It’s about joining their story, their hurts, their past. And it’s about that child joining the family. There has to be adoption on both sides.”
Through 23 surgeries, relentless bullying, and the hidden emotional wounds that cut deeper than any scalpel, Camey wrestled with shame, rejection, and anger. Yet in the midst of spiritual warfare she describes as very real (“The enemy wanted to take me out”), she discovered a greater truth:
“Every scar has a story,” she writes in Beautifully Scarred. “And God doesn’t want to stop at your scars—He wants to make them beautiful.”
A Message for Every Hidden Wound
Salfen asked what she hopes readers take away.
“That you are seen, you are valued, and you are loved,” Camey answered without hesitation. “Brokenness does not have to be the end of your story. There is hope, and beauty can rise from even the darkest places.”
She paused, then added softly, “My mom always told me, ‘Camey, this too shall pass.’ And it does. Healing may not come in our timing, but if we trust God’s perfect timing, He is creating something beautiful.”
From Memoir to Movement
Beautifully Scarred is available now on Amazon. Camey also released a companion five-day devotional on the YouVersion Bible App (free at CameyJoy.com), connecting Scripture and reflection to help readers find courage in fear, healing in brokenness, and beauty in pain.
And yes—she dreams of seeing her story on the big screen one day.
“Every door the Lord opens, I will walk through boldly,” she declared.
In a world that often feels hopeless, Camey Joy’s life shouts the opposite: No child is beyond rescue. No scar is beyond redemption. And every “yes” to adoption has the power to change generations.
Because some stories aren’t just worth saving—they’re worth telling.
