This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is Project Hail Mary, the highly anticipated big screen sci-fi epic starring Ryan Gosling and the hype is real and the wait was worth it. Based on the hit novel by Andy Weir. the story takes place in the future when the sun is dying because of a mysterious substance dimming it and a science teacher is plucked out of obscurity based on some unorhodox and ambitious ideas he had in previous years that just might work. He unwillingly ends up on the mission and becomes the only human that can save the planet – but then finds he’s not alone in his mission. With Gosling being the only person on screen for about two of the two and a half hours, it shows his abilities as being able to command a screen in a way we haven’t seen in this capacity before. His charm, wit, and good looks make him an appealing star, even if he doesn’t really seem like a random high school teacher. The film is beautifully shot, perfectly scored, and full of emotional depth. Even though it seems to have an end that keeps going, it’s still engaging throughout. It’s probably the most enjoyable movie in recent times on the big screen that can be recommended to almost anyone. It’s worth seeing in IMAX, too. Expect this one to be a big hit and be remembered at awards season – and as one that people have actually seen. Think Cast Away meets Gravity meets E.T. It’s a grand adventure and a great reason to say going to the movies is alive and well. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM MAGAZINE, and RECRD.
