Interview by Paul Salfen

Henry Jackman has established himself as one of today’s top composers by fusing his classical training with his experience as a successful record producer and creator of electronic music.

“I’ve spent a lot of time working in the record industry,” says Jackman, “and for my money being a film composer is way more fun. You can be working on X-Men, and then a movie set in 17th-century Italy. It’s not about showing off what you think is cool or what you want to hear, but ‘what is this movie about, and what would best serve it?’ That process just leads to strange and remarkable places.”

Jackman’s upcoming feature is the anticipated drama from The Russo Brothers, Cherry, Lakeshore Records digitally released the lead single “The Comedown” by Henry Jackman (Captain America: Civil War, Big Hero 6) from the highly-anticipated Apple Original film from the Russo Brothers, Cherry. The single will be available exclusively on Apple Music for 60 days before becoming available to all other DSPs on March 19th, 2021.

Elaborating on the single, Jackman stated, “‘The Comedown’ represents the thematic climax of the score for the movie “Cherry.” For me, the challenge was to match with music the consummate ending to the film that the Russo Brothers had created. In order to achieve that, the final piece had to be stirring and cathartic, but also philosophically and emotionally ambiguous.”

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo said of Jackman and his score, “This is Henry’s most sublime work. Beautiful, poignant, riotous, devious. Breathtaking in its ability to manifest such complex tones, while unifying them at the same time. He’s truly a master of the craft.”

Cherry follows the wild journey of a disenfranchised young man from Ohio who meets the love of his life, only to risk losing her through a series of bad decisions and challenging life circumstances. Inspired by the best-selling novel of the same name, “Cherry” features Tom Holland in the title role as an unhinged character who drifts from dropping out of college to serving in Iraq as an Army medic and is only anchored by his one true love, Emily (Ciara Bravo). When Cherry returns home a war hero, he battles the demons of undiagnosed PTSD and spirals into drug addiction, surrounding himself with a menagerie of depraved misfits. Draining his finances, Cherry turns to bank robbing to fund his addiction, shattering his relationship with Emily along the way. Brought to the screen in bold, gritty fashion by visionary directors Anthony and Joe Russo, Cherry is a darkly humorous, unflinching coming-of-age story of a man on a universal quest for purpose and human connection.

Cherry will premiere in select theaters on February 26th, 2021 and globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, March 12, 2021.
