This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is Drummer Boy, the big swing Revolutionary War musical that sees For King + Country’s Joel Smallbone leading the charge with all skills on display in a story about two brothers on the opposite side of the war and a love distanced by enslavement. It’s an often touching, soaring epic that will likely catch audiences (and critics) off guard. There’s nothing else out there like it so you have to give it points for that but it will especially speak to faith-based audiences that enjoy stories about faith and forgiveness even during hard times. Although there are some recognizable character actors in the mix, the movie belongs to the lesser known younger leads, India Brown and Lucas Leach. Directed by Ben and Joel Smallbone, the film feels like a throwback with a more poppy contemporary sound with quite a production, showing Angel Studios further spreading their wings so to speak into big screens with some decent counterprogramming that knows its audience. It comes at an interesting time given the week of release is a divisive political time but maybe the message is what’s needed right now. That’s it for this week.
