This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is Jimmy, the biopic about Jimmy Stewart that follows the Oscar-winning actor’s admirable career serving in the military and the making of his favorite film, It’s A Wonderful Life, while dealing with a crippling case of undiagnosed PTSD. KJ Apa truly embodies Stewart in body type – getting painfully skinny for the role and adopting mannerisms and an accent so different from his own, showing a range far from CW’s Riverdale. With a strong supporting cast in Max Casella as Frank Capra, Neal McDonough as his father and Jason Alexander, Rob Riggle, and Christopher McDonald rounding it out, the film does a fine job in its look and feel of the era and hits some high points but it’s likely one that audiences will like more than critics as a movie about a good man of faith that stayed away from controversy and although flawed, generally did the right thing usually catches the ire of the hardened critic as too sweet or sentimental but maybe that’s what audiences need in this strange time in the world. It couldn’t hurt to have a movie with a positive message come out during a divisive week politically after all. It’s nice to see a good man remembered fondly. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM MAGAZINE, and RECRD.
