Interview by Paul Salfen
In an exclusive interview with AMFM Magazine, host Paul Salfen sat down with Scott Mann,Victor Danell and Albin Pettersson, to discuss their groundbreaking film, *UFO Sweden: Watch the Skies*. This Swedish sci-fi adventure, now making waves in U.S. theaters, marks a historic milestone as the first movie to utilize advanced AI technology for seamless multilingual dubbing, transforming the cinematic experience.
SYNOPSIS: A rebellious teenage woman’s father went missing years ago and she believes that he didn’t run away, but was abducted by aliens. She joins forces with a funky UFO club made up of a lovable group of weirdos and rejects. Together, they embark on an adventure that takes them far beyond the boundaries of the law and ultimately, our world.
A Technological Leap Forward
WATCH THE SKIES is no ordinary film. Originally shot in Swedish, it was reimagined for global audiences using cutting-edge AI to re-render actors’ facial movements, perfectly syncing English dialogue with lip movements. Victor explained, “What used to happen is you were having to rewrite the script to fit the wrong mouth movements. This technology corrects the mouth movements to the right dialogue.” The result? A dubbed film that feels as authentic as if it were shot in English, erasing the clunky artifacts of traditional dubbing.
Scott Mann, co-CEO and co-founder of Flawless, emphasized the invisible power of this technology: “The point of the technology is to remain invisible. Enjoy the movie.” Backed by years of development and significant investment, this pipeline opens new doors for filmmakers, allowing stories from smaller markets to reach global audiences without losing their essence.
Hailing from a small Swedish town, the filmmakers never imagined their “very typical Swedish movie” would resonate internationally. Albin Peterson shared, “We were so sure it would never work on the American market.” Yet, the universal themes of family, friendship, and adventure transcended cultural boundaries, earning praise at festivals and captivating diverse audiences. Victor noted, “It’s a fun adventure for the whole family… you can just take your friends and enjoy.”
The film’s unexpected global success underscores the power of storytelling amplified by technology. As Scott pointed out, breaking the language barrier expands a film’s reach: “If you can present it to 8 billion people in different languages, the stage increases vastly.” This democratization of cinema empowers creators from smaller regions to dream bigger, with greater resources for future projects.
For those inspired by their journey, the filmmakers offered heartfelt advice. Victor emphasized passion: “It’s so important to have fun and be totally in love with the films we are doing.” Alvin highlighted the advantage of AI tools, which allow filmmakers to craft stories in their native language while reaching global audiences without remakes. Scott encouraged embracing technologies that enhance creativity, urging new filmmakers to “understand where it’s all come from” to elevate their craft.
Beyond entertainment, WATCH THE SKIES serves as a cultural bridge. Scott reflected on its deeper impact: “Films are the great equalizer. You can step into someone’s shoes, empathize, and understand different cultures.” By making stories accessible in any language, the film fosters global understanding in a polarized world.
Paul Salfen raised an intriguing question: could this AI-driven feat qualify for an Oscar in visual effects? Scott, while humbly biased, agreed it’s a “turning point in cinema,” blending the artistry of filmmakers with scientific innovation. Whether the Academy takes note, the film’s impact is undeniable.
At its core, WATCH THE SKIES is a heartwarming genre story that captivates all ages. Scott shared, “I’ve watched this movie many times, and I still love it every time. It warms me.” Its blend of thrilling sci-fi and relatable human connections makes it a must-see. As Victor put it, “It’s for the whole family.”
