This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is Evil Dead Burn, the bleak new entry into the popular horror franchise and it’s probably the least enjoyable entry in the series. The franchise is unique in that each movie is tonally different. Sam Raimi’s trilogy started with horror, then added comedy, then added action-adventure, then the remake got dark but also gave us some societal commentary, then the last one gave us a big bloody new twist and this one just gave us unlikable characters and a wide array of cringe inducing body injuries and gore for gore’s sake. While it does have a unique look and feel, it just isn’t a good time at the movies. The story follows a woman who lost her hotheaded husband after a tense argument and goes to seek comfort with her in-laws and, of course, there’s a family connection to the Deadites and they each become one and everything just goes to hell. It’s pretty dark and demonic and while you might expect some of that, this is more gallow’s humor than the humor of Evil Dead past. It’s all pretty meanspirited – and all against characters you don’t really care for. Hardcore fans and dark horror enthusiasts may enjoy this but this certainly won’t be for everyone. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM MAGAZINE, and RECRD.
