The new faith-based film INDIVISIBLE shows the dark underbelly of the military family life as wives and children accept the homecoming of battle-worn veterans back into the family. and community.  This true story of Army Chaplain Darren Turner (currently active duty) digs in deep and doesn’t hold back. Turner was sent to Iraq in 2007 fresh from seminary and basic training, and wasn’t prepared for what happened there. The film shows the PTSD reality for veterans as well as their families, as it shows how  husband/father/soldiers become emotionally distant and sometimes mean.  As an ex-Air Force “Brat,” it’s very hard to watch without tears welling up.  There is a scene where an argument in the kitchen between Chaplain Turner and his wife Heather hits all too close to home, as most of “Brats” will attest to.

There is a subset of at least 5 million of military “brats” in the United States with countless “Brat” facebook pages and groups as well as a few really great films dedicated to the trauma, excitement and danger of belonging to this subset, including Brats: Our Journey Home.  One strong theme echoed throughout this community is the dependence of the families upon each other while the actively deployed member is fighting a war in a foreign country.  A lot of  “Brats” bond to each other as an extended family and their friendships last for most of their lives. INDIVISIBLE portrays this perfectly, as we watch safely in our seats at home as some of the community die, become dismembered, and psychologically changed forever.

The movie stars Sarah Drew, Justin Bruening, Jason George, Tia Mowry, and Madeline Carroll.  The cast does an excellent job of a genuine portrayal of the emotions of  military life, especially Executive Producer Sarah Drew who also plays the Chaplain’s wife Heather.

Without giving too much away, there is a crisis of faith with the Chaplain, and the family as well as friends must come to terms that some come home, some come home physically changed, but all come home psychologically changed.  Even if they don’t come home with the outward appearance of broken limbs, some come home with broken hearts and minds. We all have these stories,  I remember as a child hiding with my cousins and grandmother in a back bedroom at her house after a loud backfiring lawnmower set my Korean war vet uncle into a machete brandishing rage.  (His best friend was blown up in Korea and body parts landed all over him…not an excuse but that’s real trauma.) Another war vet (my Vietnam Vet father) had to take him down to the ground.   This was long after the Korean war, and shows the far-reaching effects of the military experience upon families many years after they’ve come home.

INDIVISIBLE is a must-watch for everyone, but especially current and former military spouses and families.
