This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is Masters of the Universe, the live action reboot of the 80s animated favorite that features He-Man and his fellow heroes battling it out against Skeletor and hordes of evil creatures. Directed by Travis Knight, an admitted fan, it’s clear that the material was handled with love – and for those of us that grew up on the show, it’s a massive relief. While other 80s IP has stumbled, this one does justice to the source material while updating it with a wink and a nod to the dated parts. Nicholas Galitzine is perfect as Adam/He-Man and Camila Mendes as Teela, Idris Elba as Duncan, and the rest of the crew is solid but the real question was Jared Leto as Skeletor – and it’s pretty good. While the nasally voice isn’t what we remember, he still has the sassy remarks, funny expressions, and personality we wanted to see even if in a bizarrely low and British accent. The story follows Adam, who is sent to earth and has to live as a normal young man with a job until he can find the magic sword that will bring him back to his world and he can save it with the help of his superpowered friends. Of course no one believes he’s an alien prince but then you can probably guess the rest. It’s a fun journey full of nostalgia and fan service that’s good for the whole family and can carry on a beloved story to a new generation – and now beyond. That’s it for this week.
