This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is Power Ballad, the new music-based film from John Carney, who hit us in the feels with Once, Sing Street, and Flora+Son. This time around, the story revolves around a wedding band singer, played by Paul Rudd, who moved to Ireland after getting a girl pregnant at one of his original band’s shows and while he never made it, he has a decent family life and plays other people’s hits. Then he plays a show at a wedding and a popular boy band singer, played by Nick Jonas, gets up to do a song with the band, which sparks a late night songwriting session and a hit is born – except Rudd’s character never gets credit and it sends him spiraling, thinking about what could have been and it threatens his current livelihood. It’s more of a cautionary tale than one of music bringing us together as with Carney’s previous films but it will still get you and make you feel something. The anchor song as always is a great one and it’s hard not to get a little misty-eyed at the end, which is exactly what you’d expect here and isn’t it nice to get what you paid for? Any movie that celebrates the power of creativity and following your dreams is ok in my book. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM MAGAZINE, and RECRD.
