This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters now is Sarah’s Oil, the incredible true story of an 11 year old African American girl that became a millionaire when her land in Oklahoma on Indian land turns out to be full of oil just as she believed after being dismissed and the land written off as barren by others. Naya Dasir-Johnson owns the role as Sarah and fleshes out the heart and soul of the story in a way that we don’t often see from young actors her age. The film also stars Zachary Levi, Sonequa Martin-Green and Garret Dillahunt in this Wonder Project-released faith-based story that almost seems unbelievable in its plot points and characters but it’s apparently all true. This one is not only a safe watch for the whole family, but good for kids to see not only for the inspiration for young viewers but also for an important discussion on historical perspective. Some critics may see it as a little too faith and family oriented but for its target market, this one is exactly what it is – a crowd pleaser with heart. It also offers great counterprogramming to the drab awards fare of the season and a break from the dark times in the world – even if it does give a glimpse into a darker time in humanity in a way. The light shines through. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM Magazine, and KLAK.
