The Odyssey Movie Minute Review

This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters now is the biggest film of the summer, The Odyssey, the new Christopher Nolan epic based on the classic poem by Homer that gives us three hours of action, fantasy, and epic cinema in a way only Nolan could. Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, who is trying to get home after losing his way and his men during battle, he encounters a cyclops, nymphs, a witch, treacherous creatures, and the wrath of the gods. With everything in the world against him, he desperately tries to get back to his queen and son (played by Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland) and goes through a gamut of feelings about his place in the world, his responsibility in war, and what his legacy means. It’s quite a film all the way around and is worth seeing on the biggest screen possible. Any controversy surrounding the involvement of Travis Scott, Elliott Page, and Lupita Nyong’o should be dismissed because they all fit in just fine and collectively accounted for only a few minutes of the film, which runs for several hours. There is nothing to change here. Sure, it could have gone with different accents, Greek actors, or made the pretty actors look more period-centric, but it’s a grand big screen epic with big stars that’s been adjusted slightly for modern audiences to give it a hero’s journey and a satisfying ending, which is an appropriate move for a big commercial endeavor. It’s a grand time and a great excuse to keep the theatergoing experience alive while keeping cool for a few hours this summer. That’s it for this week.
