This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is The Uprising, the gritty new Paul Greengrass film about the uprising against the tyranny of King Richard II and it’s striking. It’s dark, violent, and unsettling – and really resonates today. Andrew Garfield is always great but he really shines here as Ploughman, covered in dirt, blood, and not glamorous at all, who leads the angered masses into a rebellion. He’s backed by a great supporting cast, including Jamie Bell, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie and Woody Norman, who delivers a solid turn as the underhanded king who’s taxing the poor and not connecting with the people. It’s the true story that inspired Robin Hood and while it does seem like it’s making a statement, the story stands alone and really tells a truly great story that leaves much to think about regarding politics, faith, and human behavior. Although it once again has the shaky handheld stamp of Greengrass, which bothers some audience members, most should be able to see it as feeling the unsettling experience that the characters were.
