This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters soon is Young Washington, the new historical epic that gives us a glimpse into George Washington’s younger years on the battlefield way before his presidency. While not too much is known about Washington’s younger years, director Jon Erwin takes a swing at it with a respectful and honorable story that shows the founding father in his struggles to be accepted, facing failures and learning how to win – and his consistent display of bravery. Willian Franklyn-Miller plays Washington and does a fine job in his first starring role – and what shoes to fill – but he’s backed up by Oscar winner Sir Ben Kingsley, Kelsey Grammer, Andy Serkis, and Mary Louise-Parker, so he was in good company. It’s a hero’s journey and an origin story taking place when Washington was 22 in Virginia desparately trying to be in the British service to no avail and everything leads to what we do know, which fleshes out his story making this a prequel of sorts. And while this does come from a faith-based studio, the story is pretty secular and straightforward save a prayer and mention here but it’s not overwhelming for those not of faith. It’s a power move for Erwin and company to release this on the 250th anniversary of the country, showing it on the big screen during such a divisive time. But audiences are now supporting higher-quality faith-based projects anyway, and this is a universal story that means a lot to our country. It could serve as a timely reminder and great time to brush up on a history lesson. That’s it for this week.
