Steve Hudson Talks Stitch Head: A Monster Movie with Heart (and Stitches!)

    Interview by Paul Salfen

High above the quaint town of Grubbers Nubbin sits a crumbling castle laboratory, home to the maddest of mad professors and his forgotten monstrous creations. But keeping the chaos in check? That’s the unsung hero’s job—enter Stitch Head, the professor’s very first creation, a patchwork being who runs the show unnoticed and unthanked. Until, that is, a ramshackle freak show rolls into town, led by the sly Fulbert Freakfinder, dangling promises of fame, fortune, and even love.

This whimsical, heartfelt twist on the Frankenstein legend, Stitch Head is a comedy adventure for monsters of every age. Directed and written by Steve Hudson, the film blends spooky fun with a feel-good message, making it perfect family viewing this Halloween season. In an exclusive interview, Hudson opened up about the joys of bringing this stitched-together tale to life, the responsibility of crafting stories for kids, and the moments on set that left him grinning like a ghoul.

A Blast from the Castle Lab

“This one was so much fun,” Hudson beams. “It really looked like you had a blast making it.” And from the director’s infectious enthusiasm, it’s clear the sentiment is mutual. “It’s fun, it’s got a good message, and I think families will enjoy watching it together because it’s fun for the kids, but it’s also really enjoyable for the adults.”

Hudson, no stranger to family-friendly hits, knows the power of a story that bridges generations. Stitch Head delivers laughs for the little ones—think monstrous mishaps and freak show antics—while sneaking in deeper themes for grown-ups about recognition, self-worth, and the quiet heroes among us.

    Juggling Monsters and Messages

Directing a film with “a lot of balls in the air” requires focus, and Hudson has a mantra for staying on track. “What do you keep in mind that kind of keeps you on the right path?” we asked. Though he keeps it close to the chest, his passion for meaningful entertainment shines through. “Of course, it’s meant for entertainment, but there’s a good message here too.”

What does he hope kids take away? “A blessing,” he says simply. In a world where young viewers idolize creators, Hudson’s tale of an overlooked creation finding his spotlight encourages empathy and creativity. “Kids will be looking up to you thinking, ‘I want to tell a cool story like this too,’” he notes. His advice for aspiring storytellers? Dream big, stay true, and remember: even the smallest stitch can hold a monster together.

    Magical Moments on Set

Was there a “pinch-me” instant amid the madness? “Do you remember a point where you’re just kind of looking around, going, ‘This is so cool. I’m always going to remember this’?” Absolutely, Hudson confirms. With creatures roaming the castle and a freak show in full swing, set life mirrored the film’s chaotic charm. “You feel a sense of responsibility for making a certain kind of film for them,” he admits, reflecting on his young fans and past kid-favorite projects.

A Halloween Treat for All Ages

As the credits roll on Stitch Head, families will leave with giggles, goosebumps, and a heartfelt reminder that everyone deserves their moment in the moonlight—even forgotten monsters. “Beautifully said,” Hudson laughs. “Thank you so much for being with us today and Happy Halloween!”

Grab your popcorn (and maybe a needle and thread), and head to theaters for Stitch Head. It’s the perfect spooky-season stitch-up for monsters young and old.
