Hip-hop pioneer Dr. Yolanda “Yo-Yo” Whitaker—the Grammy-nominated rapper, actress, educator, and philanthropist known for her fearless contributions to the genre—has added a delicious new chapter to her multifaceted career. In her cooking series Downright Delicious with Yo-Yo, airing on AspireTV, she trades the mic for the spatula, whipping up bold, flavorful dishes while sharing life lessons, family stories, and the kind of real talk that has defined her journey.
In an insightful interview with Paul Salfen, Yo-Yo opens up about how her lifelong passion for cooking evolved from feeding friends on tour to becoming the heart of her new show. “I’ve always been cooking,” she reflects. “I cooked on the road for Too Short and Cube and the Lench Mob… They would pay me to make specific dishes.” But it wasn’t until she slowed down—surrendering old habits, prioritizing family, and finding peace during the pandemic—that cooking became more than a skill. It became her calling.
The pandemic gave her space to experiment, share on social media, and eventually land a pilot that AspireTV embraced. Downright Delicious isn’t just recipes—it’s a full experience. “We’re not just getting you cooking on here,” Yo-Yo explains. “We’re getting some bits about life, we’re getting inspiration… You can smell the music, you hear the cocktails.” The show blends quick, masterful dishes inspired by global travels and restaurants she’s visited, with vulnerable moments of growth. From recreating steakhouse-quality steaks at home to mastering dishes outside her comfort zone, Yo-Yo approaches cooking like she approaches hip-hop: as an art form, just at a different pace—one that fits her life now.
Viewers can expect variety this season: vegan options, Brazilian-inspired recipes (complete with hunts for that perfect ingredient), creamy mushroom cauliflower “steak,” and more. “I really made this thing taste like a steak,” she says proudly of one experiment, highlighting her willingness to try new things and stay vulnerable on camera. Family plays a starring role too—especially her mother, Mama Mia, who joins her in the kitchen. “Cooking with my mother is very powerful… My mother by my side cooking gangster in me and bully me in the kitchen is the real sight to see.”
Yo-Yo’s advice for aspiring cooks (or anyone chasing dreams) is straightforward and rooted in her own path: “You gotta jump in and cook.” Make mistakes, research, experiment through trial and error, and make it your own. “Just like anything, you have to do it by trial and error… That’s the beauty of it.” She draws parallels to music and TV—start simple, do your homework, find your signature dishes, and run with them.
The interview also touches on her personal transformation. Her “Hail Mary” moment? Letting go of the old “Yo-Yo” persona to rediscover Yolanda. “Killing Yo-Yo so that Yolanda could see herself again,” she says, describing a journey of forgiveness, vulnerability, and self-responsibility that led to peace. Now, as Dr. Yolanda Whitaker (with honorary distinctions and sisterhoods like IWC), she’s at ease in the kitchen and beyond. Faith, boundaries, dependability, and showing up fully keep her grounded.
And yes—new music is coming. After a break, Yo-Yo is approaching it fresh, unboxed, and peaceful. “This is Dr. Yolanda Whitaker now… Yo-Yo is the middle man.”
