This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters now is Send Help, the latest twisty thriller from Sam Raimi and while it has solid actors, plenty of gore for Raimi’s fanbase, and is pretty intriguing, the writers forgot one essential element of a good movie: a likable character. Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien duke it out in a ridiculous Cast Away meets Spy vs Spy story about two colleagues, one with solid qualifications but no social skills that thought they had the big job when the boss retired and one that actually got it with the social skills and almost no qualifications. But when stranded on an island after a plane crash, the roles are reversed. Similar to Drag Me To Hell, there’s some audience joy in seeing a bad boss get his, but the employee isn’t so good either. There’s plenty of strife and double cross right until the end but both characters become so cartoonish and unlikable that you honestly don’t care if either wins or if they just get stuck on the island. That said, some people enjoy this kind of competition and love rooting for bad people, but not this person. It was a gruesome chore to get through and although I like both actors and Raimi, I wanted someone to send help to get me out of that movie early. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM Magazine, and RECRD.
