Interview by Paul Salfen
Austin and Dallas are in for a treat as Spike and the Gimme Gimmes, the world’s greatest punk rock cover band, roll into Texas for two electrifying shows. Tonight, they’ll light up Radio East in Austin, followed by a performance tomorrow at Three Links in Dallas. In a recent conversation, CJ Ramone (formerly of the Ramones) and Jake Kiley (from Strung Out), two key members of this super-group, shared their excitement about the tour, their love for Texas, and the unique energy of the Gimme Gimmes.
A Texas-Sized Setlist with a Selena Surprise
The Gimme Gimmes, led by the charismatic Sean “Spike” Slawson, are known for their genre-defying covers, blending punk rock grit with everything from country classics to pop hits. This Texas stop is extra special, as the band is paying homage to the Lone Star State with a cover of a Selena song. “We’re doing a Selena song down here in Texas,” CJ Ramone revealed, noting the crowd’s enthusiastic response to the tribute. “They loved it in San Antonio, and we’re excited to bring it to Austin and Dallas.”
The setlist spans the band’s extensive catalog, featuring tracks from their latest record, classic covers, and a few surprises. “It’s a good mix,” Jake Kiley shared. “It goes through all the records, spans the whole catalog, and definitely does some things off the last record as well.” Fans can expect high-energy performances of songs like their rendition of Olivia Rodrigo’s hits, which get younger audiences “super amped up,” alongside timeless covers like “Over the Rainbow,” which even had death metal fans singing along at European festivals.
A Super-Group with a Storied History
Spike and the Gimme Gimmes are a punk rock institution, a revolving door of talent featuring members from legendary bands like The Ramones, Black Flag, Social Distortion, Rocket From The Crypt, The Damned, Strung Out, and No Doubt. Formed in 1995, the band has built a global following with their irreverent, harmonious blend of punk and pop culture. CJ Ramone, who joined in 2017, and Jake Kiley, a veteran of Strung Out, bring their own punk pedigrees to the mix, creating a chemistry that’s as tight as it is entertaining.
CJ, who’s been in the music business for 37 years, reflected on the joy of playing with such a seasoned crew. “I’m playing with guys who have their own careers and successes,” he said. “It’s a treat to be with veterans. There’s a really easy feeling in the camp.” Jake echoed this sentiment, praising Spike’s ability to command a crowd: “He’s not just a singer; he’s a real frontman who entertains like nobody else.”
Connecting with Fans, Old and New
One of the band’s greatest strengths is their ability to bridge generations. CJ noted the shift in their audience over the years: “When I first joined, it was mostly people around the band’s age. Now, we’ve got a lot more younger people, parents bringing their 13- and 14-year-old kids.” This evolution speaks to the band’s enduring appeal, fostering not just Gimme Gimmes fans but rock and roll fans in general. “Hopefully, that brings about the next generation,” Jake added.
For CJ, the most memorable moments come from smaller, intimate shows where the band can connect directly with fans. “The energy trade-off when the crowd is right up against the stage, when you can look into their eyes—that’s the most enjoyable,” he said. While massive festival stages offer an adrenaline rush, it’s the close-up connection that keeps the band grounded.
Advice for Aspiring Musicians
When asked what advice they’d give to young musicians dreaming of a career like theirs, CJ and Jake were unequivocal: just go for it. “Get out there and do it,” Jake urged. “Practice in your room, get your chops down, but then join a band, meet some friends, and get on stage. There’s nothing else like it.” CJ, reflecting on his 37 years on the road, added, “The first time I played live, I’ve never been the same. I’m still chasing that every day.”
Texas BBQ and a Packed Tour Schedule
Beyond the music, the band is soaking up the Texas experience. “We had some great barbecue the other day,” CJ shared, hinting at their plans to enjoy Austin and Dallas’s vibrant food scenes. The Texas shows are just one stop on a packed schedule, with a West Coast Christmas tour kicking off November 28 and running through December 6, followed by a UK run. The band is already working on new songs for these dates, ensuring fans get fresh material alongside their classic covers.
A Hail Mary Moment
When asked about their career-defining “Hail Mary” moments, both CJ and Jake pointed to the early days of performing. For Jake, it was those first times on stage, feeling the chemistry with his bandmates and proving to himself he could do it. For CJ, it’s the ongoing privilege of playing with the Gimme Gimmes. “I feel really blessed to still be doing what I’m doing,” he said. “The Gimme Gimmes asked me on, and I still get to experience those cool interactions.”
