In a career full of landmark moments, former Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland has just delivered one of his most ambitious projects yet — and he’s still riding the high. While chatting with AMFM Magazine’s Paul Salfen, Poland recounted the surreal experience of recording Nuclear Messiah’s commanding spoken-word intro with William Shatner at the legend’s house. “We did the recording on his patio,” Poland shared. “He read it and… when I got back to the studio, they wanted me to do sound effects… but then I noticed that he was speaking in perfect three-quarter time. All his pauses were in time.” That spontaneous magic directly shaped the music.
The full album, Black Flame, arrives tomorrow (April 24) via Cleopatra Records, and the new single “For Mad Men Only” — a roaring May Blitz cover featuring Joe Lynn Turner on vocals and Pat Travers on guitar — is already out and crushing it.
“It’s unreal,” Poland says of the massive project. “I never thought I would be playing on a record like this where all these basically rock stars are on the record with me.”
Produced by Cleopatra founder Brian Perera, Derek Hughes, and Jürgen Engler with A&R from John Lappen, Black Flame unites nearly 40 rock and metal icons across five decades — from Rick Wakeman, Arthur Brown, Chris Adler, and Sebastian Bach to many more. It’s a true metal summit celebrating legacy, musicianship, and unrelenting fire.
Poland highlights several tracks that stand out for him:
- Arthur Brown’s “Ride the Sky” — “I love his vocal performance… It just has so much heart and feel to it.”
- “Death and Glory,” where the singer “nailed the character.”
- And his current favorite: “For Mad Men Only.” “I forgot all about it until the single came out and I was like, oh man, this song is cool.”
That same studio alchemy Poland experienced with Shatner carried through the entire record. He describes getting inside a song quickly, often nailing takes on the first or second try, especially when the chemistry clicks — something he also felt deeply with Dave Mustaine in Megadeth. “We both have a spot in our heart that is dark… and we seem to gel together on stuff like that.”
Beyond Black Flame, Poland teased more music on the horizon: a fusion release with Gar Samuelson, a Requiem tribute to late M-Theory drummer David Eagle, and a new M-Theory album tracked on a magical 1974 Rupert Neve console.
His advice to young musicians chasing the dream remains refreshingly grounded:
“If you’re playing music because you want to be rich or you want to get girls, that’s one thing. Eventually you’ll fall by the wayside. But if you really love playing… and you’re always hungry, then you know you’ve got it. And eventually it’ll come.”
From a kid in his bedroom nailing “Mississippi Queen” on a mono record player to sharing stages and records with rock royalty, Chris Poland’s journey proves the power of that hunger. Black Flame is the latest explosive chapter.
