Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Resilience, Sisterhood, and Breaking Barriers

By Paul Salfen for AMFM Magazine

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (DCC) are more than just a symbol of American sports culture—they are a testament to resilience, hard work, and an unbreakable sisterhood. In an exclusive interview for AMFM Magazine, host Paul Salfen sat down with veteran cheerleaders Jada McLean and Armani Latimer, alongside rookies Kelly Villares and Charly Barby, to discuss their journeys, the challenges they’ve overcome, and the emotional rollercoaster captured in Season 2 of Netflix’s America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. From their fight for fair pay to personal triumphs, these women share what it truly means to wear the iconic blue and white stars.

    A Sisterhood That Shines

The conversation begins with palpable excitement as the cheerleaders reflect on the release of Season 2. “We’re so excited for everybody to see this,” one of the cheerleaders shares, acknowledging the emotional highs and lows that define their journey. The docuseries pulls back the curtain on the grueling process of becoming and remaining a DCC, and the women embrace the vulnerability of letting the world see their authentic selves. “It’s a bit nerve-wracking,” Jada admits, “but our goal as cheerleaders is to be genuine and show the world who we are.”

This authenticity is a cornerstone of the DCC experience. Jada, a fifth-year veteran from Palm Springs, California, describes her path to the squad as a dream fueled by her father’s love for the Cowboys. Auditioning in 2020 during the height of COVID, she took a leap of faith, submitting a video with no certainty of success. “The worst that happens is they don’t pick me,” she recalls thinking. That bold decision led to her donning the iconic uniform, a moment she describes as “the opportunity of a lifetime.”

Armani, also a fifth-year veteran, shares a similar story of taking a chance during COVID auditions. “I had no clue what I was getting myself into,” she laughs, noting that she moved to Texas and dove into the process without prior prep classes. Her perseverance paid off, and she’s now a vocal advocate for her teammates, particularly in the squad’s historic push for a 400% pay increase, a milestone highlighted in Season 2. “Seeing our fight for fair pay on screen felt so validating,” Jada says, emphasizing the team’s openness about advocating for what they deserve. The pay increase, reportedly raising veteran wages to over $75 an hour, marks significant progress, though Jada notes, “Change happens over time, and our organization is receptive to that.”

    Overcoming Obstacles with Courage

For rookies Charly Barby and Kelly Villares, the path to the DCC was marked by setbacks that only strengthened their resolve. Both were cut during the 2023 training camp, a heartbreaking moment captured in Season 1. Undeterred, they returned in 2024, earning their spots on the 36-woman roster. “I’ve never worked harder for anything in my life,” Charly says, her voice filled with pride. “This dream has been everything to me.” Kelly, a New Jersey native, echoes this sentiment, recalling her lifelong dream of becoming a DCC. “When I found out I made the team, it was unreal,” she says, laughing about her decision to keep her hair brown post-makeover as a symbol of her commitment.

Their comeback stories resonate deeply with fans, who cheered their emotional return in Season 2. “The slow-motion scene of us crying when we made the team—that’s exactly how it felt,” Charly shares. Their bond, forged through shared adversity, exemplifies the sisterhood that Jada and Armani emphasize. “We’re teammates, but we’re sisters,” Jada says. “We rally together, no matter what.”

Armani’s story adds another layer of inspiration. Diagnosed with alopecia areata at age 12, she has used her platform to raise awareness about the autoimmune condition. In a powerful moment in Season 2, she performed without her wig during a game, a bold act of self-acceptance. “I wanted to show little girls out there that they are beautiful, no matter what,” she says. Her teammates’ support, particularly from Charly, who calls Armani “my idol,” underscores the team’s unity.

    Advice for Aspiring Cheerleaders

When asked what advice they’d give to aspiring DCCs, the cheerleaders offer wisdom rooted in their experiences. Jada encourages, “Never live in regret. You don’t know how far you’ll make it unless you try.” Armani emphasizes hard work and self-belief: “If you’re 100% committed, it will happen for you.” Charly advises against trying to fit a mold, noting that the team values individuality: “Who you are is exactly who they want you to be.” Kelly highlights confidence, urging aspiring cheerleaders to know their worth and what they bring to the table.

These principles guide the cheerleaders through the intense demands of their role. From grueling training camps to game-day performances, the process can be overwhelming. Jada shares her strategy: “Take one thing at a time. It helps slow down my thought process and keeps me less anxious.” Armani leans on her faith, reminding herself that “God has already planned out my life.” Charly and Kelly focus on staying positive and remembering their “why”—the passion that drives them to push through exhaustion and challenges.

A New Perspective on Hard Work

Season 2 of America’s Sweethearts has shifted public perception of the DCC, revealing the immense physical and mental demands of the job. “People gained a lot of respect,” Kelly says, noting that viewers now see the full scope of their year-round commitment. “It doesn’t end when you make the team—it just begins a new chapter,” Charly adds. From off-season training to performing an entire game’s choreography before kickoff, the DCC’s dedication is undeniable.

The cheerleaders also reflect on their “Hail Mary” moments—times when they took a leap and it paid off. For Jada and Armani, auditioning during COVID was their defining moment, a risk that led to their roles as veterans and leaders. For Charly and Kelly, it was returning after being cut, giving 110% to achieve their dream. “We said, ‘Let’s not live in regret,’” Charly recalls, a sentiment that resonates throughout their stories.

    Looking Ahead

As the interview concludes, the cheerleaders express gratitude for their journey and excitement for the future. Jada and Armani, who retired at the end of the 2024-2025 season, are ready for new chapters—Armani with her sights on law school, and Jada optimistic about the DCC’s continued evolution. Charly and Kelly, now second-year veterans in 2025, are eager to carry the legacy forward. “We’ve grown so much,” Kelly says. “Being part of this is something we’ll carry forever.”

With America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Season 2 streaming on Netflix, Jada, Armani, Kelly, and Charly invite fans to witness their resilience, advocacy, and sisterhood. As they cheer for a Cowboys Super Bowl, they continue to redefine what it means to be a DCC—proving that behind the iconic uniforms are women who inspire, uplift, and break barriers.
