This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters now is Insidious: Out of the Further, the sixth entry into the spooky franchise that sees Lin Shaye as the last remaining holdout from the original and even though, yes, her character is dead, they still found a way to put her in there. This time we see a young mother raising her daughter in the house she grew up on where she tragically saw her mother kill herself in front of her but, of course, there was more to the story. She travels into The Further and tries to come to grips with the past that haunts her and save herself from the same fate while protecting her daughter from dealing with the same issues. It’s really a brilliant way to talk about generational trauma, anxiety, depression, and suicide and dress it up as a spookhouse horror flick so kudos to writer-director Jacob Chase for that. But while the idea is bright, it does lose its way into The Further of filmworld at some point by following the formulas and doing a lot more of the same. It’s by no means a perfect movie, but it is pretty scary fun in places and poignant in others with some decent performances by Amelia Eve and Island Austin. Fans of the franchise and people looking for a little jolt before spooky season should be satisfied. That’s it for this week.
