In theaters now is Primate, the new big bad ape horror flick from genre director Johannes Roberts, who brought us Resident Evil and The Strangers sequels as well as 47 Meters Down if that gives you an idea of what you’re getting into. It’s big, it’s bloody, and when it gets going, it’s a lot of fun to see in a crowded theater. The story follows a group of friends that go on a tropical vacation and, of course, it all goes ape-well, you know what when a primate is infected and gets loose. Think Cujo with an ape but by a pool in a beautiful setting. The film gives us a new star in Johnny Sequoyah and a little gravitas with Oscar winner Troy Kotsur as a father-daughter duo stuck in a big mess when anyone and everyone near this rabid primate is in danger of an over-the-top gruesome death. The effects are great, the jump scares are plenty, and while it isn’t reinventing the wheel, it does a more serviceable job than most January horror flicks. That’s it for this week.
