In theaters soon is The Performance, a deeply touching film based on the short story by Arthur Miller that follows a tap dancing crew that struggles to make it at home and on tour and finds themselves in a lucrative deal to play in Germany as Hitler is rising to power and when The Fuhrer himself takes interest in the troupe, the troubles begin as their leader, Harold May, is Jewish. Starring Jeremy Piven, who worked for years to get the film to the screen and to train as a tap dancer, this film not only shows a new side of Piven’s talent, but gives us a new surprise awards contender. Directd by his sister, Shira Piven, Jeremy here sheds any bit of Ari Gold and plays a man haunted by the horrors of Nazi Germany but also still wanting to focus on his art for a living regardless of who enjoys it. The story is quite relevant now and will likely hit home to more this year than it would have during its years in development.It’s worth a watch – and for the discussion that will likely follow afterwards with anyone you see it with.
