This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is Supergirl, the much-anticipated superhero flick that finally gets a reboot – and it’s not super. With great source material and presumably the best resources at DC, it’s confounding how this could go so wrong. Coming off like a B-team Guardians of the Galaxy meets Mad Max, this grimy, surly, and unwashed collective only shines in very few places. Milly Alcock may not be traditionalists’ pick for our hero: she starts out hungover and looks hungover most of the film, is crass, isn’t very polished, and doesn’t even get in the outfit until an hour and twenty minutes plus in. Then there’s our villain, who’s just – odd and not very menacing, then there’s Jason Momoa as a supposedly powerful dark force but just comes off like Aquaman with some KISS meets black metal makeup complete with bar visits and sly quips. I hate to say it but the best moments are when Superman shows up and brings some poise and class – or as Supergirl calls him, some “nerd” to it – but it’s not enough to save it. Director Craig Gillespe delivers a slow first half and when he finally fires it up, it’s not on a James Gunn level. It should also be noted that it’s not really for kids, so beware of that if you’re thinking of bringing little ones. It’s understood what was trying to be done – a rough around the edges imperfect “punk rock” kickbutt story but it’s not punk rock and it kicks very little butt. Hopefully the next phase of the new DC Universe will take flight, but this isn’t a good sign. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM MAGAZINE, and RECRD.
