This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters now is Toy Story 5, the further adventures of our beloved toys and, of course, it hits us right in the feels just as we’d expect. With a perfect track record in the decades it’s been in our lives and the return of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as Woody and Buzz, you know it’s going to be sweet, sentimental, and fun – but what you don’t see coming is how timely and poignant it is. While the other entries go with the times, it’s hard to ignore the state of kids today: they’re distracted by their devices and don’t play with each other as much or interact together – and it’s worrisome and well-reflected here. The story follows a young girl that ditches her toys for a LillyPad tablet device to try and keep up with her friends and her parents begrudgingly let her and then it becomes clear the screen addiction and isolation is going to take its toll. Buzz and Woody take a backseat to Jessie (Joan Cusack), who is the beloved toy of the young girl. Of course we see all of our favorite characters and the return of Forky and get a fitting theme song by Taylor Swift to wrap it up in a nice little package. While not as teatjerk-y as other entries, it’s fine to give our emotions a break and settle into this sweet story for the whole family that should give something good to talk about with the kiddos on the ride home – if they can put down their devices long enough to listen. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM MAGAZINE, and RECRD.
