Review by Paul Salfen
This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is Karate Kid: Legends, the new film that carries on the tradition of the beloved film series in a very ’80s way that’s quite different than Cobra Kai in feel but still hovers in that universe. It’s a lighthearted and fun crowdpleaser with all of the elements that made the film series so popular. It’s a fish out of water story that sees a young kid unwillingly get moved to New York City after a tragedy at home in China and he meets a girl and of course she happens to have a boyfriend that’s the best fighter at a local dojo and fighting ensues and he has to stand up for himself in a big public fight. Sound a little familiar? Of course it doesn’t break any new ground, which may get it kiyahed by critics but audiences will revel in the Ralph Macchio/Jackie Chan combo and will heartily accept Ben Wang as the new Karate Kid along with a tender storyline with Joshua Jackson and Sadie Stanley that gives the story extra depth and heart. It’s a breezy nostalgia trip that’s quick and fun -perfect for a summertime trip to the movies with the family. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM Magazine, and RECRD.
