This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters now is Lee Cronin’s The Mummy. The reboot from the Evil Dead Rise director is, of course, full of blood and guts and horrifying imagery – a long stretch from the delicately paced bloodless black and white classic starring Boris Karloff but still effective in its own way. The story follows an American family working in Egypt whose lives take a tragic turn when their young daughter is kidnapped and presumed dead. She ends up being found and returns to America but she’s not the same. She looks different – quite scary, actually, doesn’t really speak, and has lost that childhood innocence. Turns out she’s posessed by an ancient spirit and chaos ensues. It’s brutal all the way around. Sad, scary, and horrifying for the family but also for the audience. It’s not one of those fun horror flicks – this one is grotesque and unpleasant. If that’s your brand of horor – mean-spirited and full of ick, this is for you – but it won’t be for everyone. Jack Reynor and Laia Costa sell it in the devastated parents department and young Natalie Grace has the Linda Blair thing down pat but unfortunately, there’s not much new here and it’s often a hard watch. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM MAGAZINE, and RECRD.
