This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters now is Scream 7, yet another convoluted sequel in the horror franchise that never seems to live up to the hype – or excitement of the original. Of course with no critics screenings and minimal advance stories, it stands to reason that they’re banking on the nostalgia of Neve Campbell returning and original writer Kevin Williamson directing and new stars like Mckenna Grace and Isabel May to bring the audience in – and in that case, they’re right. That is enough to pique interest, but what happens then? Now the fans are waiting – but we get the same old whodunnit Scooby Doo slasher story but this time with an AI twist to make sense of the uptick on the pandering fan service. It gets so silly at some point, that you think about the Scary Movie trailer that ran before the film and Ghostface just doesn’t seem as intimidating anymore. This was a good chance to reset after a successful reboot and losing a couple of key cast members but it seems it’s just another cash grab, but cash it will grab – people will flock to it regardless. Bringing back Sidney Prescott and putting her daughter in danger with Stu possibly behind it with Gail Wathers hot on the trail seemed like a good outline but it was just passable. But then again, by the time other horror sequels got to a part 7, they got a little long in the tooth as well. But given the sparse landscape at the theater and the inching up to Halfway to Halloween, it’s good programming to get people back in the theater, so there’s that. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM MAGAZINE, and RECRD.
