This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is Obsession, the buzzed-about horror flick from Curry Barker – and it does not disappoint. With a breakout performance from Inde Navarette as Nikki, this “careful what you wish for” tale of horror is uncomfortable in so many places and really does keep you on the edge of your seat in a way that a lot of genre flicks promise to but never deliver. The story follows a shy and seemingly sweet young guy named Bear, played by Michael Johnston, who has a crush on a girl and can’t seem to muster the courage to tell her. After not being able to give her this “one wish willow” gift he found for her, he makes the wish for her to love him more than anything and the craziness ensues into, well, absulute obsession. At first there’s some sweet immediate love that you know isn’t right with flashes of psychosis and then it just goes all out and very extreme. After a hit run at festivals, this one is ready for the big time and it’ll likely hit with audiences – but be warned, this isn’t a casual date flick or something kinda spooky – it’s intense – but very effective. If you’ve wished for a true jolt from a horror film, your wish has been granted but you have been warned of what you’re about to see. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM MAGAZINE, and RECRD.
