This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is The First Omen, the prequel to the devilish 70s flicks that still haunt people to this day. In those, Damien Thorne is the offspring of the devil and this story follows his mother, played by Nell Tiger Free, that is on her way to becoming a nun when she runs across a dark and neglected child that leads her to a reveal that the priests and nuns are up to a diabolical plan. Just like the originals, this has a dark tone full of dark hallways and alleyways, long shadows, strange looking characters, and evil around every corner. Director Arkasha Stevenson nails the look and feel that the film needed although the writing gets convoluted, with her and three others credited for it. The effects get quite modern but overall it sticks with a brand of horror that fans of the originals should like. While it’s quite similar to Immaculate, which just came out and will likely draw comparisons, it has the brand advantage. It’s a little rough and convoluted and certainly not for the faint of heart Beware the devil, indeed. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM Magazine, and RECRD.
