Review by Paul Salfen
This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is The Senior, the crazy but true story of Mike Flynt, the 59-year-old college dropout that felt he had unfinished business and went back to school to finish his senior year and play football again – and actually did it. Even though you know what’s going to happen so there’s a bit of predictability, it’s the ride that is the fun part. Director Rod Lurie takes this classic sports story in a less faith-based route than most Angel Studios releases but he also brings in the gravitas of a seasoned film professional that knows how this should be seen. Remember, this is a guy that got a call from Steven Spielbeg wanting to buy his movie. Michael Chiklis is perfect casting as an almost dead ringer for Flynt and really sells the part in an already unbelievable story. Backed up by Mary Stuart Masterson as the better half wife and the almost unrecognizable – and in this – very serious Rob Corddry as the coach, it’s one of those sweet cheer along films that’s really hard to not like at its core, although surely it will have detractors given the nature of the story and studio, but is there anything wrong with a feel-good sports movie with a positive message during a dark time in this world? Not at all. It’s the beginning of football season and a great way to kickoff the weekend with the whole family. Sports fan dads will especially love it. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM Magazine, and RECRD.
