This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters now is Deep Water, a throwback shark flick that’s a crowd pleaser with a few surprises. Directed by Renny Harlin, who gave us 90s hits like Cliffhanger, Cutthroat Island, Die Hard 2, and another shark flick, Deep Blue Sea, this one follows the implausible idea that a faulty charger could spark up in the luggage underbelly and cause a plane crash into the ocean where ravenous sharks are waiting. But with stars like Oscar winner Sir Ben Kingsley and Aaron Eckhart as our pilots, an impressive little girl, a villain we really want to get eaten, and material that’s right in Harlin’s wheelhouse, it actually works and works pretty well. It makes you wonder why we don’t have more of these classic character-driven explosive practical action flicks that play perfecly on the big screen in a full house. Produced by Gene Simmons, this one resets our fears to go back in the water right before beach season and if you’d believe it, may make you shed some tears and give you some good laughs. It’s an unapologetic b-movie popcorn flick – but a pretty effective one. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM MAGAZINE, and RECRD.
